Dear James,
I am writing to you now to tell you about my most memorable experience in life.
You know, when I was a little girl I was really a selfish girl who often complained to my family members, especially my parents, about what I had and what I wanted.
Once day, the most terrible thing happened to our family when I was about my thirteenth birthday. It was very late at a very hot summer night. After revising my lessons for the next class, I immediately went to bed without turning off my computer. Unfortunately, there was something wrong with my computer and the fire started in my room. I was waken up in panic when my room was filled with smoke. I sreamed for help as I was so frightened and got choke. After several unsuccessful attempts, my father was able to unlock the door and rushed into the room to take me out of the room just as the flame burst out. As soon as all my family members got out of the house, it burst into flame.
Although I lost many things in the fire, the experience helped me to grow up. The fire destroyed everything we owned. But slowly I began to realize that I didn’t really need those things. I just needed my family. After all, you can get new clothes any time, but a family can never be replaced. The experience taught me to appreciate my family more than any other things.
That is my most valuable lesson in life, and I really hope that you will let me know your unforgetable memory of your own.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Love,
HOANG LUONG
Exercise 2: Who is the most important person in your life? What is he/she like? What has he/she done that makes him/her so important in your life? How do you feel about him/her?
Everyone has a number of family members, relatives, friends, and acquaintances, but noone has a lot of important persons who have great influence on his or her own life and work.
Among the persons I know or have contacts with, my father is the most important one to me.
Being a mechanic, my father has to work very hard day after day. Sometimes, he has to work on night shifts or extra-time so as to earn enough to feed the family. Hard work makes my father looks older than he actually is at his forty-five of age. Despite his being busy with daily work, my father tries hard to spend as much time with us as possible. At home, he always sets a good sample for all the family members to follow. He, together with my mother, is always the first to wake up in the morning to be sure that we, the children, have proper breakfasts and ready things for new-days’ routines. He is, for us, the warmest, most caring and loving father on earth. He teaches us every valuable thing in life. His humourous stories cheer me up whenever I feel down or I am in trouble. He encourages me, gives advice, and stands by my side through my tough and happy moments. The thing I admire most about him is the lessons he often gives me “My beloved one, life is hard but man always advances forward”, and “My daughter, to be truly happy in life, you should learn to stand up on and walk with your own feet, and try to be yourself under any circumstances”
Exercise 3: What is the longest distance you have ever travelled? Where to? Who did you go with? What did you do when you got there? What do you remember most about the trip?
MY FLIGHT CX919 HANOI-HONGKONG-MANILA
It came as a surprise to me when I was chosen to attend a six-month Intensive English Teaching Methodology Course at Batangas State University, the Philippines. I knew that my long harbored dream of studying abroad became true and that I had an opportunity to have the longest distance travel ever in my life.
Exercise 4: Can you describe the best gift you have ever received? Who gave it to you? In which situation or on what occasion? Why do you like it?
Exercise 5: This is part of a letter you receive from an English friend. Could you please tell me about the nightlife in your city/town? What is the atmosphere like? What activities can you do at night in your city/town? Tell me about activities you like doing most!
Exercise 6: This is part of a letter you receive from an English friend. I often go to the countryside with my family at weekends. What about you? What do you usually do at weekends? Please tell me about your last weekend and whether you like it or not!
Exercise 7: This is part of a letter you receive from an English friend. I hope that next year I could have a chance to travel to Brazil. How about you? If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? And why?
Exercise 8: This is part of a letter you receive from an American friend. I know you also use Facebook- a very popular social network in the world. When did you first use it? How often do you use it? What do you usually use it for? What do you like most about using this social site?
Exercise 9: This is part of a letter you receive from an English friend. I know that you like reading books. What kinds of books are you interested in? When do you usually read books? Could you please tell me about the book you like most?
Exercise 10: This is part of a letter you receive from an English friend. I know that you love your town/city so much. In the next letter, could you please tell me about your town/city? What will you remember most when you are away from it?
